Introduction: The Mediterranean Spur-thighed Tortoise is classed as an Appendix II animal of the Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species (C.I.T.E.S.) and has been since 1984. This prohibit's the commercial trade in this species and means that they are completely protected.
Mediterranean Spur-thighed tortoises can still be obtained in the UK , as they are bred successfully in captivity. However, for the sale, barter or exchange of a tortoise a licence is required from the Department of The Environment.
Habitat: In areas with hot summers, moist or dry areas, hillsides and light woodland
Origin: The Spur-thighed has the largest distribution being found throughout the Mediterranean, as far east as Iran and as far north as the Black sea.
Diet:
WILD - Herbaceous and succulent plants, native to the Mediterranean.
CAPTIVE - A wide range of weeds and green vegetation. Although tortoises enjoy most fruits; an excess should not be given as their sugar content can increase and cause digestive problems and diarrhoea.
Tortoises should also not be provided with any meat-based food, in captivity; if they are it can cause serious health problems in the long-term.

WILD - 15 years Approx
CAPTIVE - 6-8 years
Lifespan:
The maximum life span of these tortoises is not known for sure but given the correct care they can live for 100 years plus.
